From September 2022 people holding job offers in a small number of occupations may apply for residence. Some occupations are a direct pathway to residence while others require a period of two years or longer before applying.

From September 2022 people holding job offers in a small number of occupations may apply for residence. Some occupations are a direct pathway to residence while others require a period of two years or longer before applying.

There are qualification and/or occupational registration requirements to meet. Establishing if an overseas qualification matches the NZ equivalent qualification before applying is paramount for success.

Certain occupations (IT) have minimum income requirements.


Green List Occupations With a Direct Pathway to Residence

Eligible migrants employed in the green list occupations can come to New Zealand on a work visa from 4 July 2022. Those eligible can also apply for residence from September 2022.

Green List occupations with a direct pathway to residence are:

  • Project Builder
  • Quantity Surveyor
  • Surveyor

Engineering

  • Chemical Engineer
  • Civil Engineering Technician
  • Civil Engineer
  • Electrical Engineer
  • Electronics Engineer
  • Electrical Engineering Technician
  • Electronic Engineering Technician
  • Environmental Engineer
  • Geotechnical Engineer
  • Industrial Engineer
  • Materials Engineer
  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Production or Plant Engineer
  • Structural Engineer
  • Engineering Professionals (Not Elsewhere Classified)
  • Telecommunications Engineers
  • Telecommunications Network Engineers

Medical

  • General Practitioner
  • Anaesthetist
  • Psychiatrist
  • Specialist Physicians Not Elsewhere Classified
  • Surgeons (Including General Surgeons, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Neurosurgeon, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Otorhinolaryngologist, Urologist and Vascular Surgeon)
  • Other Medical Practitioners (Including Dermatologist, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Ophthalmologist, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist and Radiation Oncologist)
  • Resident Medical Officer
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist
  • Clinical Psychologists & Psychologists (includes Educational, Organisational and not elsewhere classified)
  • Physicist (Medical)
  • Orthoptist
  • Veterinarian

IT

  • ICT Managers ($120,000)
  • Software Engineer ($120,000)
  • ICT Security Specialist ($120,000)
  • Multimedia Specialists ($95,000)

Sciences

  • Other Spatial Scientist
  • Environmental Research Scientist
  • Food Technologist


Green List Occupations With a Work Pathway to Residence

Green List occupations that may apply for residence after working in New Zealand for two years or longer are:

Agriculture

  • Dairy Farm Managers

Education

  • Teachers - Secondary school teaching Science, Mathematics, Technology or Pacific Languages.
  • Teachers – Early Childhood

Medical

  • Anaesthetic Technician
  • Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Medical Imaging Technologist
  • Medical Radiation Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Sonographer
  • Podiatrist
  • Audiologist
  • All Registered Nurses (including but not limited to Aged Care)
  • Midwife

Trades

  • Automotive Electrician
  • Diesel Motor Mechanic (including Heavy Vehicle Inspector)
  • Electrician (General) –registered
  • Plumber – registered

The work visa categories set to close are:

  • Essential Skills Work Visa
  • Essential Skills Work Visa – approval in principle
  • Work to Residence (Talent – Accredited Employer)
  • Work to Residence (Long Term Skills Shortage)
  • Silver Fern Job Search Work Visa (closed October 2019)
  • Silver Fern Practical Experience Work Visa.

Update

Policy Decision Key Dates in 2022

  • February 13. Fully vaccinated Kiwis plus certain other travellers entering NZ from the rest of the world* can skip MIQ.
  • April 30. The border starts a phased reopen to fully vaccinated foreign nationals.
  • April 30. The Productivity Commission reports back to the government on immigration settings.
  • May 9. Applications open for mandatory Employer Accreditation.

*Excludes high-risk countries.
