Time to apply for residence?

Nearing three years' work in NZ? Apply for residence before the rules shift.
If you have been working in New Zealand for almost three years, now might be the time to consider applying for residence.
Under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC), also known as the points system, people can apply for residence once they have reached three years of New Zealand work experience.
There are some important details to consider. Immigration New Zealand will look at whether your job qualifies as skilled employment, what your current pay rate is, and whether you were earning the right amount when your work visa was issued and when your residence application is submitted.
SMC rules may change
The government is reviewing the SMC and it is likely that changes are coming. It is not yet clear when those changes will take effect or what they might be. Anyone considering residence should look closely at the current SMC rules and if eligible apply now.
Get advice before your visa expires
It can feel overwhelming at times, especially if your work visa is due to expire. The best step you can take is to get a professional assessment of your eligibility from a trusted licensed immigration adviser.
If you are not ready to apply for residence right now or don't qualify, it is important to understand whether your work visa can be extended and what your visa options are.
