Parents – time to reunite?

Immigration NZ will restart this month selecting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for parents looking to join children in NZ. The first selection takes places on 8 August. Because of a communication hiccup a further 100 places will be selected in September.

The threshold for a parent to qualify remains high in terms of the income requirements for the sponsoring child who is resident in NZ. We have discovered some people qualify under the Parent Retirement category but had already joined the long Parent EOI queue before they contacted Malcolm Pacific Immigration.

The Parent Retirement category doesn’t have an EOI process. Parents can proceed direct to lodging a residence application. The main requirements under the Parent Retirement category are:

• Own NZD $1 million available to invest in NZ for four years.

• Assets or funds to the value to NZD $500,000 (don’t have to be moved to NZ).

• Have an annual income of NZD $60,000 per annum.

• Be of good health and character.

The Parent queue will take many years to clear. The difficulty is that while waiting in a queue peoples circumstances change, and this may mean they no longer qualify. All it takes is a change in health, a NZ child relocating overseas, or the sponsoring child incomes changes. All of a sudden the money, time and emotion invested is wasted. If you want your parent to qualify sooner, then the Parent Retirement category is worth considering.
