Skilled workers: what you need to know about applying for residence in New Zealand

If you hold a PhD and are working in New Zealand as a university professor, the path to residence is relatively straightforward.
If you do not, the journey is more complex.

Most applicants use the points system or the Green List

For the majority of skilled workers, residence is granted under one of two main pathways:

  • The points system under the Skilled Migrant Category
  • The Green List residence pathways

At first glance, the points system seems simple. Secure six points and residence should follow. But in practice, it is far more involved.

Immigration New Zealand assesses multiple factors when reviewing applications, including:

  • Whether overseas qualifications match a New Zealand equivalent
  • If the applicant has been paid at the appropriate level over time
  • Whether the job in New Zealand qualifies as a skilled role

Many workers who arrived after the border reopened in 2022 may now have three years of local work experience. If you are one of them and considering applying under the points system, take the time to understand the full criteria before proceeding.

The Green List may offer a more direct route

The Green List sets minimum standards for specific occupations that are eligible for residence. These include qualifications, pay thresholds, years of experience and more.

Applicants must meet all listed requirements for their occupation. Meeting some of the criteria will not be enough for residence to be approved.

Meeting two out of three requirements is not sufficient. Every box must be ticked.

A recent update for teachers

In a welcome change, Primary and Intermediate School Teachers have been moved from the Work to Residence pathway to Straight to Residence.

This means eligible teachers can now apply for residence immediately, rather than waiting two years. The update reflects the urgent need for qualified teachers across the country.
