Accredited employers under investigation

Almost 200 accredited employers are being investigated by Immigration NZ. A small number of employers have already had their accreditation suspended or cancelled.

There are clear signs that job checks are taking longer to process. Expect delays in the processing of work visas following criticism that migrant workers documents have not been verified in previous visa applications.

The government has ordered a review of the Accredited Employer scheme. In the meantime the Minister of Immigration announced this week the removal of the 90-day trial period to AEWV job checks, and employer applications (new or renewal). There is also a direction to Immigration NZ to get tough on accreditation and job check applications. No doubt the processing of work visa applications will follow suit.

Anyone who has concerns about documents they may have provided Immigration NZ in the previous applications should take advice now. If your employer is under investigation, then now is the time to talk to an immigration professional.

There are around 28,000 accredited employers so the number being investigated is small in comparison to the overall number of employers who have acted within the rules. If you are worried talk to your employer or seek independent advice. The outcome of the review is expected in mid-December 2023. It is likely changes to the AEWV scheme will follow. Applying early for your next work visa is the best way to avoid disappointment or complexity when the rules suddenly change.
