Tips for employers

  • The border remains closed to all visitors, most international students, and many workers. Ensure job ads are clear that applicants need to be in New Zealand if the work is low to medium skilled. Use video calls (Zoom, Facetime, WhatsApp etc) to interview specialist offshore workers.

  • Pre departure COVID-19 testing is now mandatory for all travellers to New Zealand except those from arriving from Australia, Antarctica and most Pacific Islands. Read more at www.miq.govt.nz

  • Keep a record of work visa expiry dates. Remind staff to apply at least 3 months before the visa expiry date.

  • Review your company Employment Agreements at least once a year. The new domestic violence leave allowance, upcoming increases to sick leave allowances and future amendments to the Holidays Act can be reasons for work visa applications being delayed or declined if these are not incorporated into Employment Agreements. Keep up with employment law changes.

  • Start planning for the increase in the minimum wage to $20 per hour from 1 April 2021.

  • Visa rules are constantly changing and these usually impact employers. If there are topics you would like covered in future newsletters please drop a message to lukas@malcolmpacific.com
