Malcolm Pacific Refugees in Sport Initiative. ref
As well as being victims of torture and trauma, former Refugees face difficulties of integration not faced by normal, voluntary migrants. They are often of language or ethnic minorities and have difficulty finding well paid employment. The Malcolm Pacific Refugees in Sport Initiative works with a wide network of community volunteers to integrate refugee children with local sporting bodies and assists with the payment of sports club and code fees. As children become integrated, parents gain contact with other parents, to everyone’s benefit. The main connections are through soccer, but this is being extended into swimming and martial arts. One such martial arts group has now extended its reach back into working with problem youth in the community. The helped have become the helpers. We also support a refugee-based professional soccer team, the “Malcolm Pacific All Refs” who came second in their league and who have now spawned their first outstanding player to be accepted into a European squad. www.aucklandras.org.nz/community/sport.html
Outline out
In spite of the removal of legal barriers Gay and Lesbian people still face unique issues in the community. Outline is a well established voluntary welfare organization that supports GLBTT people at multiple levels built around a core Telephone Helpline Service utilizing over 70 volunteers. People call for all sorts of reasons – loneliness and isolation, sexuality and sexual health, STI, HIV, relationship, legal and ethical issues.

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. apo
Sometimes great things happen against the odds and the Auckland Philharmonia (APO) is one of those. With major State funding going to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra based in Wellington (although it tours, so is regarded as “national”); Auckland, New Zealand’s biggest city, lacked the presence of a locally-based symphony orchestra. The battle of volunteers and enthusiasts to fill that gap by producing the APO is a heart-warming story. Through dedication, commitment and community and sponsorship support the APO is today a recognized world class Orchestra of 68 professional musicians, with international classical CDs to its credit, and a full programme of concerts and performances. Malcolm Pacific are proud to be sponsors.www.apo.co.nz
Counties Manukau Rugby. steel
As New Zealanders we have to be rugby mad and support Counties Manukau, home of the Steelers and the Chiefs. Modern rugby is an international game and players are recruited from beyond the provincial boundaries of their home province. Guess who handles the immigration and visa issues? www.steelers.co.nz
